Built for $1.75 million in 1977 and designed by Ukrainian-American architect Zenon Mazurkevich, parishioners intended it to be the most beautiful Ukrainian church in the world. Indeed, the church has been listed on several architecture websites’ lists of the world’s most unique churches. Here are some facts that make it so unique:
“It’s terrible that we Ukrainians always come together in times of tragedy, but what I saw is something that could be forgotten rather quickly,” said John Jaresko, head of the parish council at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Bloomingdale. To memorialize those victims, and all new Ukrainian heroes, the community around St. Andrew church decided to erect a permanent reminder to their sacrifice.
While many Ukrainians take up arms in the struggle for Ukrainian freedom, photographer Joseph Sywenkyj makes his contribution from behind the lens. Creator of the photo documentary project titled “Project Wounds,” Sywenkyj says he aims to showcase the “monumental problems facing those who were wounded fighting on the front lines for Ukraine’s European and democratic future.”
